The Iowa Rush went into the final weekend of State Cup with the possibility of having four teams advance to the finals depending on the results of their semi-final games taking place on Saturday. After the day of Semi Finals games in the brisk wind and dropping temperatures, the Rush U15 Girls, U17 Boys, and U18 girls were all advancing to the State Cup Finals set for Sunday morning. Unfortunately, the U17 Girls ended their State Cup run in dramatic fashion going out in the 7th round of penalties.
Heading into Sunday's State Cup Final matches, with the temperature continuing to drop and the wind picking up, it was sure to be a battle of halves for each game.
- U15 Girls - The U15 Girls started off the day going down 2 goals early off of two long range efforts that sailed over every player on the field and into the back of the net. The girls bounced back and controlled the remainder of the game, getting an early goal back in the second half. However, they could not find the equalizer and finished as State Cup Finalists in their age group.
- U17 Boys – The U17 Boys were in for a battle against the returning State Champions from last years State Cup. The game was even, going back and forth with no real goal scoring opportunities in the first half. Unfortunately, with 3 minutes remaining in the first half the Rush gave up the first and only goal of the Championship game. They battled and controlled the tempo of the remainder of the game, having shots sail just over and just wide of the net, only to end their State Cup Run as Finalists.
- U18 Girls - The U18 Girls, returning State Champs, came out strong putting two early goals and setting the tone for the remainder of the game. The girls put forth a strong, controlling effort, which entailed some great goal scoring opportunities, while allowing the opponent virtually no attack throughout the duration of the game. Final Score was 4-0 Rush and they finished the State Cup as Champions for the 3rd year in a row! Not only did this conclude their State Cup, but they also finished their MRL season at 8-0, and were named MRL champions for the season!
“The Iowa Rush was yet again able to have a strong presence in State Cup this year” stated Greg Hennelly, Director of Coaching for the Iowa Rush. Hennelly followed up with “Although some of our teams were unable to come away as champions, our players put forth the hard work and effort throughout the season to be there. This is not the case for many other teams throughout the state. A special congratulations goes out to our U18 Girls team and Coach Brazeau on yet another State Championship for their team and the Iowa Rush!”
The Rush will conclude the Fall Season this weekend with teams traveling to Kansas City and Minnesota for the final games of the season. Good luck to all teams!
