The U18 Rush Pikes Peak Nike Boys saw off Storm Copa in a thrilling match for the Colorado State Cup Championship on Sunday. With only 5 minutes left in the second period of extra time, a corner from Owen Brailey found Alex Tilberry flying in at the near post to head in the game-winner.
The game was edged by Rush in the first half but although they were dominant in the shots on goal category, the game was tied 0-0 at the half way point. 15 minutes into the second half a scuffle resulted In a player from each team being sent off leaving each team a man down. With about 12 minutes left in the half another corner found its way to Nestor Hernandez, who rifled the ball in the top corner to put Rush up 1-0 (Nestor would earn game MVP honors for his efforts on the day).
Unfortunately the lead lasted less than 5 minutes and another set piece saw Storm draw level.
As the game moved into extra time, there were many tired legs and players cramping, and with 5 minutes gone in the first half of extra time Storm had another player sent off for a second yellow card. This proved too much to overcome for Storm and with 5 minutes remaining Alex got the winner.
The boys now head off to Honolulu to represent Colorado at the Regional Championships in June.
Congratulations to the whole team – Head Coach Nik Penn, Assistant Coach/Ball Boy Brek Foulk, Erich Frey, Jacob Calhoun, Seth Edick, Andrew Bell, Alex Tilberry, Justin Glivar, Eric Cano, Nestor Hernandez, Evan Young, Christian Ramirez, Austin Linkous, Schyuler Vandersluis, Brandon Toves, Aaron Archer, Jared Foulk, Jonah Hady and Owen Brailey.
