April 13th/14th marks the second competitive tournament for the GU13 Rush Select National team. Earlier this year the team took on the best the West Coast had to offer at the PDT in Phoenix (at right) and now they find new challenges against the South East teams. For many players it is an opportunity to prove themselves worthy of a roster spot for the 2013 Surf Cup, considered the most competitive soccer tournament in the country. With Region 4 participating in State Cup this weekend, it has allowed alternate players from the ID camp, as well as players from FL and TN to showcase their skills against some very tough opposition.
The players are due to arrive Friday in time for a 10pm meeting at the team hotel. The job at hand is very simple: win the tournament, bond as a team and identify potential players for the 2013 Surf Cup roster.
"We have some very good players on the Open Cup roster," said Head Coach Russell Finch (Georgia Rush). "Many of them players that narrowly missed out on PDT and others from FL and TN that are mostly all ODP and Regional pool players. I am excited to see how they respond to this challenge, as well as an opportunity to be a part of Surf Cup. Also the players that were with us at PDT (Chloee Kooker, Emily Fontana, Morgan Kloosterman and Brianna Martinez) still probably feel the pain of losing in the quarters, and will be focused on only one thing this time around and that’s an Open Cup Championship, while playing The Rush Way!"
