After a 24 game domestic unbeaten run and winning every tournament they have ever entered, the B16 Rush Select found Rayo Vallecano of the Spanish La Liga too much to handle. The nerves were definitely evident in the first 15 minutes and an unfortunate slip from the Select CB gifted Rayo an opening goal. The boys did settle down and play some decent soccer, but the movement, the technical ability and the pace on and off the ball was certainly higher than anything most of these boys have ever encountered. Thanks to a string of good saves from Molde in the net, Rayo managed only one more goal (a screamer from 20 yards) to take the game 2-0.
The boys reflected the next day on the game with a recovery training session in the morning and then a guided tour and some free time in Madrid. They also got to meet a legend in World soccer in Fernando Hierro, captain of Spain and Real Madrid for over 10 years who also appreared in 4 World Cups.
Wednesday sees an even tougher test with the boys facing Real Madrid’s Academy team at the Ciudad Real Madrid. Having watched the team demolish a league opponent 8-1 early this week, the guys are anxious to see how they match up against some of the world’s best youth players. The game will be followed by a trip back to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, to see Real Madrid in Champions League action.
