Rush Teams Advance to FWR Finals

Print

There were eight Rush teams in the quarterfinals of Far West Regionals, followed by four in the semis. It seemed only fitting that two teams would advance to the final game day in Boise, Idaho. Saturday morning saw the U16 Colorado girls fall 1-0 to Mustang and the U17 Oregon girls fall to So Cal Blues 3-1. Then luck began to change.

After falling behind Sereno in the first half, the U17 New Mexico boys regrouped during an injury timeout and struck 10 minutes before the end of the game to level up. Both overtime periods would pass scoreless and the boys found themselves in a shootout. Goalkeepers on both sides would make saves in the first 5 kicks and the shootout went to extra shooters. After the Rush boys had converted their 9th kick to give them a goal advantage, the Sereno goalkeeper stepped to the spot to try his luck. A big run up and strong kick ended up sailing high and right of the goal giving the Rush boys a ticket to the final where they will face La Roca from Utah.

In the 4th semi-final matchup of the day, the U18 Colorado Rush girls struck in the first minute only to see rival Pride Predators of Colorado be awarded a penalty kick just moments later. The penalty was converted to level the score at one goal a piece. Just 10 minutes later, Rush were awarded a penalty kick which Virginia Tech bound Kelsey Loupee converted to give the Rush a 2-1 lead. Goalkeeper Molly Poletto made several big saves to hold the lead and the Rush girls saw the game through for a 2-1 win. The 18's will face off with Real So Cal on Sunday morning looking for a Region IV title. Saturday results and Sunday schedule are below.

Day 1 at Far West Regionals was a tough one for Rush Soccer on a grand scale. Of the 17 teams to step on the field, only six would walk away victorious. New Mexico Rush won at U13 and U17 Boys and Colorado won at U16 and U18 Girls to lead the way. In the 'Rush Game of the Day', the U17 Idaho Rush boys played a tough Las Vegas Surf team. With hundreds of fans chanting and cheering from the sideline, the boys left the pitch with a well earned 2-1 victory. Video highlights from today's match will be available soon. Below are results from day 1 as well as the day 2 schedule and preview of the U16 Colorado Rush girls who will be featured in the 'Game of the Day'.
