Colorado Rush Wins Two State Championships on Weekend One of Finals
(10.11.10)The Rush 18 Nike Girls kicked off the day with a 2-1 shootout win over Pride Predators to secure their third straight state cup championship. The Rush 16 Nike Girls defeated the Ft. Collins Arsenal 2-1 to win their second state title in the last three years. The coldest and rainiest day of the year could not dampen the celebrations that followed the games. (The U15 Rush Nike Girls have qualified for the state championship match to be played Sunday, October 17th with a 2-1 semi-final win over Real Colorado.)

Juliana Grover scored off a Kaitlyn Bassett cross in the 70th minute to put the Rush Girls on top 1-0. The Rush Girls had the better of the play through half number one and though some quality half chances were created, none were finished. As the game progressed the Rush Girls continued to show their experience, however it was not until over time was forced did their true character shine through. As the game was drawing to an end, the referee signaled for two minutes of stoppage (added on) time. The Pride team used every second of that time to their advantage and scored off a corner kick at the end of that second minute and almost literally with the last kick of the game. Being seconds away from the title, the girls and their coach, Andrew Kummer, now had to regain their composure and get back to work. They did just that, however, neither team was able to find the winner in overtime so on to penalty kicks the game would go. Molly Poletto, the game’s MVP, was close on several occasions but on Pride’s seventh (sudden death) shooter, Molly came up with the goods and made the play of the game (see video below). Flannery Davis, from Grand Junction, stepped up and sealed the deal. Colorado Rush U18 Nike Girls are state champions!

In the second Rush final of the day, the 16’s waited ‘til the death to claim their victory. The Rush Girls came out very strong and confident and throughout the first half created some nice scoring opportunities, but in each case a save was made or the goal was closely missed. Half time would come but it was a 0-0 score line that came with it. The work continued in the second half, but the scoring opportunities did not. Moments of quality soccer and good possession were still present but so were an abundance of fouls which led to numerous scoring opportunities for Arsenal. In the 70th minute, Rush would get punished by a direct free kick that was blasted to the back of the net. 1-0 Arsenal. Less than two minutes later, Rush would answer after earning their own free kick 25 yards from goal. Gabbi Miranda (the game’s MVP) stepped up and hit a world class free kick that dipped, bent and drove its way to the back of the net. 1-1 and game on! With overtime looming, the official signaled for three minutes of stoppage time. As the clock ticked to the end of the third minute, Madi Hall dropped a ball into the box, a save was forced from Morgan Stanton’s header and Danica Evans sprinted wide of the goal, was first to the ball and slotted home the game winner. Another minute was added on but the Rush Girls saw the game out and claimed the title that they have worked so very hard for, for so long. Colorado Rush U16 Nike Girls are state champions!
