Select3This past weekend the U14 Boys Select ID Camp took place in Casa Grande, Arizona. 28 players from several states and 3 players from Bahamas Rush were joined by three coaches for a weekend long training camp to identify the top players in Rush Nation for the U14 Boys Select Team. The team will be head coached by Eric Rudland (Michigan Rush), and he was assisted by former head coach Andy Vanover (Delaware Rush) and Brian Lux (Rush Pikes Peak). “I am very excited to get to work with this group. There is a great pool of returning players and we have identified some new talent that will really help us form a great team,” said head coach Rudland.

The boys arrived on Friday, and after taking a chartered bus down to the facility an hour south of Phoenix participated in their first afternoon session. After dinner, they got their first chance to play a full sided game under the lights on the beautiful Casa Grande fields.

Day two would consist of two functional training sessions and another full sided game. In between all of that, the boys were put through a USSF “A” License-style Rush Core Value examination (and all passed with flying colors) and even got to witness the greatest taco eating contest in the history of the ID camps. Coach Lux set a new personal best by downing 12 (eclipsing last year’s record-setting mark of 10). The record was quickly shattered by Hunter Esquibel from New Mexico Rush who polished off 13. “I was very pleased with my performance today, a new personal mark is a great thing. Hats off to Hunter, I didn’t think he would able to pack that many away,” said Lux. “Uggghhhh,” said Hunter.

The camp culminated in a final 11v11 game under the bright morning sun before the boys were chartered back to Sky Harbor airport to depart back home. Overall it was a great weekend of soccer, and the coaches are looking forward to forming the team and having success at the PDT. Coach Rudland summed up the camp: “What a great weekend. I am very proud of all these boys for their efforts. We will have a great squad, I can’t wait for February!"
