NWSL MVP Horan Helps Secure World Cup Berth

After winning the NWSL MVP Award for the 2018/19 season, Colorado Rush alum Lindsey Horan focused on the CONCACAF Championships with Team USA, beating Canada 2-0 in the Championship Final.

The USWNT put on an offensive show during the CONCACAF tournament, scoring 26 goals and conceding no goals against. A CONCACAF semi-final match against Jamaica sent a message to the other 2019 FIFA Women’s Word Cup qualifying teams, using six goals to showcase the strength of this US team.

Horan commented on the atmosphere of the team going into the game with Jamaica,

“I think it was almost like any other game. This team mentality is unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of; it’s a winning mentality. No matter the game, we’re going to go out and perform, but above all else we will win. The character of this team is again, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There hasn’t been a game where I doubted we could come back or not win a game. That’s what this American spirit is all about, so going into this game was no different than any other game. We knew we needed to win to qualify and we wanted to enjoy our soccer while doing so, and I believe we truly did that.”

As Horan’s first World Cup Qualifying matches, she hopes to make an impact in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in France. Horan continued,

“This will be the first World Cup cycle that I’ll be a part of. It’s such a different and incredible feeling knowing you just qualified for the biggest stage in world soccer and now I have the opportunity to make that roster that will be going to the World Cup.”

Horan spoke on what the team needs to accomplish before they have their shot at bringing home the gold,

“I believe there is more growing to do. I believe we have the opportunity to continue to work on our chemistry on and off the field. There’s always room to get better and learn. Personally, I would still like to improve in the attack. I want to be more involved in the final third, in any sense. Final pass, pass before the final pass, scoring, etc. Continuing to make more of an impact, but based off of what the game gives me.”

The USWNT will end 2018 with two matches abroad in Europe. Two away games give the team a chance to adjust to international travel as they head into their annual training camp in January.

Catch Lindsey Horan and the USWNT November 8th against Portugal at 1pm ET, and Scotland on November 13 at 2pm ET. To see more of the USWNT schedule and updates for the 2019 season, see here.
