From First Whistle to Lasting Impact - Kate Wilson’s Coaching Journey with Rush

April 13, 2026

It is not about quick wins or instant results. It is about staying consistent, being patient, and showing up for players until the moment everything clicks. That mindset has shaped her journey and continues to drive the impact she makes every day.

Her path into coaching started simply. A conversation at her brother’s swim class led to an opportunity to volunteer, and she stepped in. At the time, she had ambitions of playing at the highest level, but quickly saw that coaching gave her something different. It gave her the chance to lead, to teach, and to make a real impact.

That early step turned into a long-term journey built on learning and strong mentorship. One of the biggest influences along the way has been Louie Garvey, who has guided her for over 20 years. Even now, they continue to connect, share ideas, and talk through sessions. That consistency reflects what strong environments look like. Growth is not a one-time moment. It is something you commit to over time.

What keeps her going is not a scoreboard. It is the moments when players grow. The moments when something finally clicks. When a player executes something you have been working on and looks over because they know they got it right. Those moments are earned, and they are what make coaching meaningful.

Her journey has also required resilience. Early in her career, she was often the only woman in the room and faced environments that did not always support women in the game. Instead of stepping back, she leaned in. She stood firm in what she believed and continued to push forward. Those experiences shaped how she leads today and how she creates opportunities for others.

One of the biggest shifts in her coaching approach came from coaching her own daughter. It forced her to step back and rethink everything. What works for one player does not work for every player. That realization pushed her toward a more player-centered approach, where every athlete is coached based on their needs, their personality, and their development stage. That is where real growth happens.

She continues to evolve, drawing inspiration from leaders like Emma Hayes, who are raising the standard in the women’s game and building stronger, more connected environments. That same mindset shows up in her work every day.

Her advice to young women who want to get into coaching is simple. Start early. Get your licenses. Find mentors who will push you and support you. Growth happens when you step into the process and stay committed.

Some of the most memorable moments in her career reflect what respect and leadership look like in real time. While coaching a boys' team during her pregnancy, she led them through an undefeated run heading into the final game of the season. Early on, earning their trust was not easy, but consistency and performance changed that. When someone questioned her, one of her players immediately stepped in to defend her. That moment stuck, not because of the record, but because of what it represented. Trust earned. Standards set.

Today, her focus is clear. Continue to grow the girls' game and create an environment where players can fall in love with soccer from the very beginning. At Fort Lauderdale Rush, that growth is already happening, with the program expanding and more players stepping into the game.

For her, success is not defined by trophies. It is defined by how many players develop confidence, build a connection to the game, and stay involved long-term.

That is what strong coaching looks like. And that is the kind of impact that lasts.
